HM Revenue & Customs have sent incorrect PAYE notice codes to a large section of the population.
The new computer system installed to provide a seamless service to businesses and individuals has been unable to cope.
As is usual for this time of year, PAYE notices of coding have been issued en masse to millions of employees in readiness for the new tax year.
HM Revenue & Customs are aware of this problem and have been working to correct the codes before the start of the new tax year.
