With the credit crunch biting many employers and employees alike, it would appear that the word ‘redundancy’ is once again rearing its ugly head and is increasingly becoming a reality for many UK employers.
The UK economy has undergone sustained uncertainty over the past six months with the collapse of the US sub-prime market and the subsequent credit crunch as demonstrated by the crisis at Northern Rock.
With many businesses seemingly unable or unwilling to spend a lot of money during this time of uncertainty, the knock on effect is that for many businesses the work is not there to justify the number of workers that they employ.
Unfortunately for many businesses the only option that they have available to them is to reduce their headcount and make employees redundant.
Employment legislation requires employees to be adequately informed and consulted during periods of redundancy and that the statutory dismissal procedure should be followed.
