Derby Grammar School To Upgrade IT

When you think of grammar schools do you have visions of Bunsen burners and school caps? Not these days at Derby Grammar School. Whilst the Bunsen burners remain, you are now likely to fall over a laser printer, computer and Bunsen in the same room with data logging equipment in use in its science laboratories. Derby Grammar School is becoming high tech!

With the installation of its new radio network this summer, the ICT provision for the 300 pupils has significantly increased and will directly benefit their education. In addition its administration is all computerised and utilises the latest Microsoft technology.

Derby Grammar School is a boys' school with pupils aged 7 to 18, and is situated in picturesque surroundings in Rykneld Road. It promotes the values of traditional grammar schools and has a proven success record in public examinations and university entry.

With small classes throughout the School it ensures that all boys receive the personal attention they need. Headmaster Roger Waller commented “our main objective is to give our young men the qualifications and confidence they will need to take them through to their adult life. Information Technology is fundamental to all aspects of life and we aim to provide all pupils with a very thorough grounding in IT.

The School now has two dedicated, fully equipped, computer rooms: one dedicated to teaching and the other as part of the Learning Resource facility. Roger added “we have invested considerably in new technology this summer and changed and upgraded our reference library and ICT rooms to provide more flexibility and better access for the boys.

Such is the extent of the size and complexity of the network, that the School has employed Cooper Parry IT Solutions to assist with network support and configuration. Cooper Parry IT is a Microsoft Gold Partner with a specialist team dedicated to the Microsoft networks.

Peter Colledge, Head of IT at Cooper Parry, commented “network support is one of the fastest growing services. As more organisations rely on their networks, it is essential that they continue to operate quickly and reliably. We are very pleased to be able to assist the School with their IT support and advances in IT education.
