What do you do?
I audit pension scheme accounts, which essentially means we check the figures entered onto the financial statements are actually correct. It’s important these numbers are accurate as many people rely on them for other work, such as an actuary who relies on the net assets we calculated to determine if the scheme is under/overfunded.
By having us check these numbers it ensures that the figures haven’t been over-inflated for years and so when a worker reaches retirement and wants their well-earned lump sum – there is still money in the pot to give them!
Why do you do it?
There are actually a select few people in this world that love nothing more than entering a load of figures onto a set of financial statements and seeing it all balance at the end – and I’m one of them! Mix this with a fun, sociable, modern workplace, and the feeling of job satisfaction is one that never goes away.
What kind of projects have you been involved in?
My main area of work is ensuring my portfolio of schemes are signed off before the 7-month deadline, as this is the statutory timeframe. Some of my biggest projects to date have included helping clients ensure this timeframe is met when they have only provided a set of accounts to audit with less than one month to go – not ideal! It’s challenging but extremely rewarding work to help the client ensure this deadline is met and also avoids the possibility of any fines for the client for such a breach.
What’s on top of your bucket list?
Top of my bucket list is to travel around Asia with my partner. I love nothing more than a well-deserved break and have visited almost every country in Europe. Naturally, I feel the next step is to venture out to another continent and explore the tropical adventures that await! I have never backpacked around as a tourist hopping from one island to another and think Thailand will be the perfect place for us to start.
