What do you do?
I am a Transaction Tax Senior and my primary role is to assist the managers/directors/partners of the team with preparing tax advice for clients who are either selling their company or purchasing a new one. Our main aim is to make our tax advice as practical as possible for our clients and make the deal as smooth as possible for them.
Why do you do it?
I work in tax because I think it is very akin to problem solving. No tax advice is ever the same and it needs to be tailored to our clients’ specific needs each time therefore one piece of work is never the same as the last. I like the variety of the roles.
I previously worked in Private Client so transaction tax is a bit of a career change for me. In that I advised clients on their personal tax position, including assisting with tax returns. I moved into transactions as I had a little bit of experience at my previous firm and really enjoyed it.
I really enjoy working at CP, the laid back feel of the firm whilst always providing the best advice to our clients is refreshing and very different to what I have experienced before.
What kind of projects have you been involved in?
One project I have been involved in recently is the sale of a UK tech business to a French tech business. This one was particularly interesting due to the cross border elements in play and something I haven’t experienced before.
The UK company was being sold for a significant amount of money and there were a lot of complex tax issues involved, the main one being the shareholders of the UK company were going to acquire some shares in the French business. We have had to liaise with a third party UK valuation expert, UK lawyers and the UK company as well as the French legal and tax team to iron out the finer details of the deal. There was a lot of collaboration from everyone involved to get to the best position possible for both the sellers and the buyers.
It was really interesting to work with so many people and see so many view points and ultimately come to a deal that worked best for everybody.
What’s on top of your bucket list?
I have always wanted to visit the Pyramids of Giza, that is definitely top of my bucket list. I have always been fascinated with Ancient Egypt, having learnt a lot about it in school and even having played games on my Xbox set in Egypt.
Just to see the oldest wonder of the world would be incredible. The fact that humans were able to build such a structure so long ago is sometimes beyond comprehension. I would also take a visit to the museum in Egypt to see Tutankhamun’s famous gold mask and if possible visit the valley of the kings and possibly King Tut’s tomb itself.
Ancient Egypt is the most interesting historical subject to me so it is definitely something I would love to see.
