What do you do?

I’m a VAT specialist. A lot of what I do is resolving situations people wouldn’t be in if they’d sought VAT advice before doing something, rather than seeking help when HMRC kick off about it!

It’s cheaper and easier to deal with VAT issues in advance. But more fun for me if you leave until after it all ‘hits the fan’.

Why do you do it?

As a fan of Monty Python I’ve always been amused by the surreal and the ridiculous – so maybe it was inevitable that I would end up in VAT.

What kind of projects have you been involved in?

I’ve been involved in litigation relating to withheld VAT repayments, solicitors’ disbursements and VAT exemptions for medical care. At the end of the day it all boils down to getting a client’s money out of HMRC’s pockets and back where it belongs.

What’s on top of your bucket list?

I like to think I’ve still got another outrageous sea kayak adventure in me, maybe the English Channel or St Kilda. But I don’t really have a bucket list.

My approach to bucket lists is more ‘let’s just have a cup of tea and see what happens’.
