In 2016, Brian’s life changed unexpectedly.
Two heart attacks at 57 forced him to rethink plans that had seemed set in stone. After a successful career spanning 35 years in marine insurance, including 14 years as Global Head of Underwriting for a marine insurer, he had expected to continue working for another decade.
Instead, a serious health scare prompted a very different conversation about what the next chapter of life might look like.
“It was a bit of a shock,” says Brian. “I was intending to do another 10 years. I really loved what I did. But we started to talk about me not going back after the second heart attack.”
What followed wasn’t simply early retirement. It was the beginning of an entirely new career.
From corporate world to artist’s studio
Brian had always enjoyed drawing and sketching, but during his recovery he began painting more seriously. What started as a creative outlet quickly evolved into something much bigger.
Evening classes became weekend courses. During Covid, he completed online programmes before undertaking a two-year diploma at an art school in Yorkshire. Slowly, a long-held interest became a professional ambition.
“I’ve always thrown myself into what I do,” he says. “I did that with my career in the city and there was no question that if I chose to do something else it was going to be a second career. It’s never been just a hobby.”
Making that transition required more than artistic commitment. Brian and his wife, Anya, needed confidence that pursuing a new career wouldn’t compromise the life they had built together.
That’s where their long-standing relationship with Cooper Parrry Wealth Relationship Director, Nick Taylor became particularly valuable.
“We knew there was always going to be a long period where I was spending quite a lot of money to establish myself. And that there would be a lead time to actually getting into a position of earning from my artwork.”
Turning uncertainty into confidence
Brian and Anya have worked with Nick for around 20 years, building a relationship based on helping them understand what their finances could enable them to achieve.
The question wasn’t whether Brian could become an artist. It was whether the couple could make such a significant life change without placing unnecessary pressure on their finances.
Rather than focusing solely on investment performance, Nick helped them understand the bigger picture. Through regular planning, projections and modelling, he was able to demonstrate the financial impact of Brian stepping away from a successful corporate career and provide reassurance that they could continue living the life they wanted.
The decision may have felt like a leap of faith creatively, but financially it wasn’t. Armed with a clear understanding of their position, Brian and Anya were able to move forward with confidence.
Confidence to make choices
That reassurance continues to play an important role today.
Both Brian and Anya describe themselves as naturally cautious with money, making their regular reviews and forward planning particularly valuable.
“Nick provides the reaffirmation each year and it’s really important to us,” says Anya. “It puts our minds at rest.”
Financial confidence has given both of them the freedom to work on their own terms.
Anya has worked as a psychotherapist for around 20 years, specialising in trauma. Because of the nature of her work, she has consciously chosen not to work full time.
For both of them, work remains something they enjoy rather than something they have to do.
“Nick gives us the confidence and periodic affirmation that we can live the life we want to live,” says Brian.
A life designed around what matters
Today, Brian paints full time from his garden studio and a large barn in Northamptonshire, where he creates the large-scale canvases that have increasingly become his trademark.
A critically acclaimed exhibition in Birmingham has fuelled his next ambition: a solo show in London.
Meanwhile, Anya continues her career as a therapist in a way that suits both her clients and the lifestyle she wants to maintain.
Neither has stopped working. Instead, they have built lives and careers around what matters most to them.
For Brian and Anya, financial planning hasn’t simply been about growing wealth. It’s been about having the confidence to make choices, embrace opportunities and create a future on their own terms.
