WHAT DO YOU DO?

My title says I am an auditor, meaning when a company produces a set of accounts to show their financial performance for the year, or how many assets and liabilities they have and at the end of the year, we come in and assess the veracity of those numbers, through various tests and reviews. In short, do these numbers make sense? Can people trust them? That’s what we do as auditors – enable people to trust the numbers. Day to day, I like to think I’m a pseudo-firefighter of the spreadsheets, understanding the issues my clients and teams are facing, and coming up with solutions on how best to resolve them and move forward.

WHY DO YOU DO IT?

I never even knew what an auditor was at school – I wanted to be a chemical engineer. Do you know how they put the bubbles in Aero chocolates? Chemical engineers do…

Though when I finished school, my mindset had changed, and I was unsure of the right path and didn’t feel university was the right fit for me. The idea was suggested to me by a family friend (who happened to be a senior tax partner at a mid-tier practice at the time), and I thought, “yeah, I like numbers, I like to talk to people, why not?”

WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN?

At Cooper Parry, the audits that I am involved in are predominantly in the Tech space – which is broad remit. I’ve worked with Cryptoassets and bespoke doggy dinners, Generative AI and microbreweries… no two days are ever the same and that’s what keeps it exciting. It’s a real valuable opportunity to understand a business/product from an outside perspective, and when clients buy in, we can add real value objectively into process improvement for them. And being in Tech – we’re at the very forefront of all that new fun stuff!

WHAT’S ON TOP OF YOUR BUCKET LIST?

Travelling through South America with my partner. We’ve got a keen appetite to get out there and see the world – I’m fascinated by different cultures, places, people and how they all fit together – and South America is the next big trip on our hitlist!
