What do you do?

Hi, I’m John an Associate Partner in our tax team and I specialise in Transfer Pricing.

What’s Transfer Pricing you say? Put simply it is setting the price for selling ‘stuff’ between related parties.

In a world of complex international trade this has loads of tax implications and I love working with clients to help them navigate this in the simplest way possible.

Why do you do it?

To be honest I’d never heard of Transfer Pricing until I started working in tax (not many people have…)

What I love about it is that it isn’t like other parts of tax. It’s not about page after page of detailed rules, it’s about understanding how a business works and I’m a bit nosey, so I love getting to know how things work!

Every day is different, whether it’s sitting down with my clients getting them to talk about how their business creates value, liaising with my international network of contacts or working with the talented teams here at Cooper Parry, there is never a dull moment.

What kind of projects have you been involved in?

I’ve got over 20 years of experience both as an advisor and working in-house, so I’ve seen life on ‘both sides of the fence’.

I’ve helped clients design and implement transfer pricing policies for goods, services, IP and financing across a range of sectors, providing them with sensible, practical solutions that strike the right balance between compliance and ease of operation.

Whilst in-house I was responsible for managing the international tax and transfer pricing requirements across 38 territories, so there aren’t many major territories that I haven’t seen. I can’t wait to share this practical experience with my clients here at Cooper Parry.

What’s on top of your bucket list?

It was to run a marathon, but as I’m running London at the end of April, I’ll have that ticked off, so I need a new one!

Maybe something less energetic this time – I want to travel more around places like India and the Far East to experience the fascinating cultures and sights.
