What do you do?

I am a Global Mobility Tax Partner and support organisations that have employees who work internationally. This can take many different forms from formal secondments to short duration business trips, through to Board Directors who live overseas and employees who work remotely from another country. There are lots of issues to consider both for the employee and the employer, but the tax piece is my specialist area! I will also be leading our newly formed Global Employer Services offering that brings our Employment Tax and Global Mobility teams under one roof. Unsurprisingly there are a lot of crossovers in our work!

Why do you do it?

I studied Geography at University and thought that my degree would align nicely with a role in ‘global’ mobility. As it turns out, it had no relevance whatsoever, but I have enjoyed working in this specialist area of tax. I joke that I know at least one person in most countries around the world, but I probably do. I also get to meet interesting people from a broad range of roles from CEO’s of FTSE 250 businesses through to crane operators on construction sites.

What kind of projects have you been involved in?

In recent times, I have supported clients whose employees have been displaced due to global conflicts. As you can imagine, this can be a very stressful time for employees and helping a client to navigate the tax implications is rewarding. Whilst tax would never drive a decision regarding employee wellbeing, it is still important for an employer to understand their compliance obligations and manage costs along the way.

What’s on the top of your bucket list?

I would really like to travel to Japan and am hopefully going to do so in the next couple of years. With 4 children I am going to have to do some serious saving up(!) but really like the idea of combining a trip to Disneyland Tokyo and the PokePark (the kids bucket list more than mine) with a week of exploring Japan and experiencing Japanese culture. I have had the pleasure of working with colleagues from Japan over the years and have always been fascinated listening to them speak Japanese. Another bucket list item would be to learn the language one day!
