WHAT DO YOU DO?
As a Senior Consultant in Governance, Risk and Compliance, I use my passion, expertise and experience in areas such as business continuity or information security, to help organisations both understand and then fulfil their requirements. This entails various activities such as auditing, training, writing policy, conducting risk assessments and building frameworks to help them protect their assets, operations and reputation.
WHY DO YOU DO IT?
I fell into the GRC sector, that’s true, but the consultancy thing happened whilst on the other side of the fence, when a consultant I was working with, suggested I would be perfect for a role where my character is my superpower. The rest is history. I found my niche and haven’t looked back. Working with such a wide variety of clients across different industries keeps things exciting, but the real highlight is running realistic business continuity exercises that give them a genuine shock (in the best possible way!). That challenge makes getting up in the morning worthwhile.
WHAT KIND OF SPECIAL PROJECTS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN?
Many of the engagements I’ve worked on involve the facilitation of realistic crises that might occur. I see the participants learning more, in these brief sessions, about their business and their supposed resilience, than they would otherwise do in months. It’s extremely satisfying playing this part in seeing these organisations gain this almost liquid value and these are fundamentally sound organisations doing it the right way, not waiting for the disaster to happen first.
There have also been several national infrastructure level clients with whom its been fascinating to peel back the curtain and then support them on their journey.
WHATS ON TOP OF YOUR BUCKET LIST?
The big one I have left, is to go tornado chasing! I’m an extreme weather fanatic and lets be honest the UK doesn’t really cut it when it comes to severe weather. The phenomena are often know as the ‘Finger of God’ and I’d give anything to be able to see one up close and personal.
