What do you do?

I’m a Tax Partner at CP, but what does that really mean??

It means being part of an amazing team at CP. Helping businesses and the key people within those businesses on their strategies and plans. Protecting what they have worked so hard to build.

Every day for me is different. I love that. Tax is everywhere. Be it Personal taxes, Business taxes, Capital Gains, VAT, SDLT – it certainly keeps me busy!

Tax flows through almost everything we do. Whether it’s personal ambitions or business objectives, every decision needs to be carefully thought through to understand the possible tax implications.

And that’s where I can help.

Why do you do it?

I don’t think anyone ever starts out at school thinking, hmmm… I know I’m going to be a Tax Advisor when I grow up – maybe some do! Like many people it was by chance that I fell in love with Tax, picking up an application form over 20 years ago to work at HMRC, and the rest, as they say, is history!

What I really love is helping people and solving problems. Working with an awesome bunch of people at CP, and with businesses and their stakeholders, to achieve their objectives whilst being mindful of the tax risks and opportunities is a perfect match of those!

What kind of projects have you been involved in?

It’s incredibly rewarding helping a business through its many twists, turns and challenges, and seeing that through to a sale, and beyond.

I’ve helped people structure their business in a tax efficient way to maximise their return on a sale.

I’ve defended a business from an incredibly complex tax investigation, resulting in no additional tax to pay.

Property purchases can be an opportunity missed or opportunity gained if structured in the right way. I’ve worked with many businesses to get Capital Allowances on a property build or acquisition. Ultimately meaning it costs less and you can spend the money elsewhere.

It’s all about adding value. Being there for people when I’m needed and bringing ideas to them.

What’s on top of your bucket list?

Beyond my love of tax (and my family of course) is Leicester Tigers.

I’ve been very fortunate to see some amazing games, but I’ve never watched the Tigers in the hot bed of rugby, the south of France.

It would be awesome to see France’s very own Haka – the Pilou-Pilou – at the Stade Mayol in Toulon.

Not quite Welford Road. But the atmosphere, noise and passion would be incredible!
